As the storage industry moves from rotating media to solid state storage that acts more like memory, the supporting software, firmware and hardware must be updated. NVMe has been designed from the ground up to take advantage of the characteristics of the new media. It is built on the proven and efficient PCIe interface by engineers and architects familiar with both storage and PCIe.
