1 Day Course
This course focuses in the region where the head and disk meet, a region only several hundred atoms thick. As head/disk spacing continues to shrink, the challenges associated with this interface grow accordingly. This course introduces students to the science of tribology and how it impacts the performance and reliability of disk drives. Also covered in depth is how the design and manufacture of the disk impact the head/disk interface.
No previous knowledge of tribology or chemistry is assumed, although a general familiarity with disk drive architecture would be helpful.
